It's a very forgiving experience, you can't goof it up which is a pro for lots of people and a con for others.ĭ2 offers more variety, more character customization and development, choices have meaning. But its a fairly shallow experience, the game play loop is much more straightforward, in the endgame you'll basically just be running rifts and only rifts, in a fairly mindless way.
I think it is worth it if you're open to the experience and will tolerate the trouble of getting it running and looking right, and then also open to a steeper learning curve, and spending some time.ĭ3 you'll be able to just hop right in. But right now, unless you're a diehard arpg fan and somehow haven't played d2 yet, I wouldn't pick up d2. I think that in the grand scheme of things d2 is a better game overall and also historically more significant.
